KATY SEVEN LAKES AND CINCO RANCH WIN SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS

The Touchdown Club of Houston at its Sportmanship luncheon  on January 20, 2010 held at the JW Marriot as presented by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes awarded local area High Schools for the best display of Sportmanship during this last football season. This years' awards were given  to both Seven Lakes and Cinco Ranch. Seven Lakes was first and Cinco Ranch was third which is a very impressive showings by these two fine schools. Second place was Dobie High School. Several schools made the Finalist list for this years awards. Congratulations to all of the winners and to those teams who made it to the finals.

Area high schools were rated by referee squads at various football games held though the greater Houston area. The referees are looking at the way teams/coaches act, the way support groups of parents act and the respect shown for the American flag.

The keynote speaker was Pro Football Hall of Fame member Brude Mathews who played here for the Houston Oilers and is a class individual as well as a great football player.

Sports is not all about just winning and here is Katy we also know a little about Sportmanship as evidenced by these awards.

The Seven Lakes Boys Basketball Team ( 25-9, 8-2) this season  won its second consecutive District 17-5A championship and beat Alief Taylor of 18-5A in the first round playoff action 78-59 on Tuesday evening. Tonight (2/25/2010) Seven Lakes plays Madison Marlins ( 15-11, 8-4) from the 20-5A at 7:30 PM at Cy-Ranch High School in second round of playoff action. The game will follow the Mayde Creek and Bellaire playoff game that starts at 6:00 PM. If you can go to the game I guarantee you will enjoy it. Plus the price is always right!!!

Seven Lakes basketball is a special treat for any basketball fan. The Seven Lakes Crazies ( my step son was an original founder) are all school group that keeps everyone interested in the game. You have to see this group in action to believe it. I previously wrote a blog when Seven Lakes held undefeated Houston Yates to under 100 points and gave Yates when of its toughest games of this season. Yates is still rated one of if not number 1 high school basketball team in the entire nation.

In addition, congratulations is in order for the Sophmore, and Freshmen B Teams for defending their district titles this saeson. The Sophmore Team was a perfect 10-0 in district play and Frehmen B Team was 8-2 in district play.

Seven Lakes is developing an a rich tradition of excellent basketball teams and it appears this will continue in the future..

ATTENDANCE REZONING OF KATY ISD HIGH SCHOOLS APPROVED BY THE BOARD

Below I have copied from the Katy ISD web site the results of a Board meeting held on Monday February 22, 2010 regarding the boundary modification of high schools in the Katy area or in simplwe english rezoning of neighborhoods from one Katy High Schools to another. I previously have written and copied information on my blog regarding this important topic. I already wrote a blog that showed the affected neighborhoods but I thought it was important to show exactly what was approved at the Board meeting. I just had a client this past Sunday ask me about this issue so I know it important or should be important to parents and home owners or both...

Attendance Boundary Modification

On Monday, February 22, the Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved the administration’s recommendation to modify the attendance boundaries for Seven Lakes, Cinco Ranch and Taylor High Schools. Only the neighborhoods listed below are impacted by this Attendance Boundary Modification.

Grandfathering and Volunteer Enrollment Option

Under the recommendation approved by the Board, all current high school students are grandfathered to stay at their current campus through graduation. In addition, the Board approved a recommendation to provide families impacted by the Attendance Boundary Modification a one-time Volunteer Enrollment Option (VEO), which would allow those students grandfathered to remain at their current high school to instead choose to move to the new high school. See the Volunteer Enrollment Option webpage for more information.

Note: Students who are currently enrolled in high school this year are grandfathered to continue at their current school for the remainder of their high school career. No action is required to continue enrollment at the current school.

Sibling Transfers

Katy ISD recognizes the importance of family involvement with and connection to their child’s high school. Therefore during the boundary modification process of Spring 2010 younger siblings will be allowed a sibling transfer to the high school that an older sibling currently attends so long as the siblings will both be in high school at the same time. If you live in a Land Use Zone (LUZ) that is being moved from Seven Lakes High School to Cinco Ranch High School or from Cinco Ranch High School to Taylor High School. See the Sibling Transfer webpage for more information.

Katy ISD Board Approves Volunteer Enrollment Option for Seven Lakes and Cinco Ranch High School Students

Parents of Katy ISD students plase pay attention and read below results from Board meeting this week..

Below I am copying from the Katy ISD web site the results of their meeting held on February 23 as the school board wants the information spread among the entire community. This issue is about the rezoning of neighborhoods in the Katy ISD to different high schools due to the projected surplus of students attending Seven Lakes High School. I have previously written and posted additional information about this topic.

(February 23, 2010) – The Katy ISD Board of Trustees approved a recommendation Monday night to provide families impacted by the Attendance Boundary Modification a one-time Volunteer Enrollment Option (VEO), which would allow those students grandfathered to remain at their current high school to instead choose to move to the new high school.

“After spending hours researching all our options and the systemic implications that volunteering could possibly cause, I believe that we have developed a Volunteer Enrollment Option that will serve the best interests of our students and families, as well as the district,” says Katy ISD superintendent Alton Frailey.

Families wishing to apply for the VEO will need to do so between March 1 and March 12. Information about the VEO application process, as well as the necessary forms and guidelines can be found on the district’s Web site starting today.

In addition, the district will hold an informational meeting for those interested in the VEO on Monday, March 1, at 6:30 p.m. in room 1200 at the Katy ISD Education Support Center, located at 6301 S. Stadium Lane. Those wishing to attend are encouraged to RSVP online.

In other action, the Board of Trustees approved the administration’s recommendation to modify the attendance boundaries for Seven Lakes, Cinco Ranch and Taylor High Schools. Developed after hundreds of hours of staff work and an unprecedented community engagement process that included five public workshops and opportunities for online input, the new boundaries will help relieve overcrowding at Seven Lakes High School.

Details of the recommendation can be found at the district’s Web site on the Attendance Boundary Modification webpage.

HOME BUYERS IN KATY, TX AND BEYOND - TIME IS RUNNING OUT!!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen.... Please pay attention and READ this blog as it maybe worth several thousands of dollars to you. If you are a First Time Home Buyer or already own a home the US Treasury is giving you free money by buying a new or resale home. Yes .. I said free money but you have to qualify. If you a first time home buyer the tax credit could be up to $8,000 and if already own a home the credit is up to $6,500. The key term here is you have to PURCHASE a home that is your primary residence. Recently I attended  a Realtor event put on by a major home builder and I found several of my Realtor colleagues did not realize that you have to PURCHASE>>> operative term here >>>> a new or resale home and that does NOT include refinancing your existing mortgage as you are NOT PURCHASING a home.

Time is running out as a buyer who wants to cash in on this free money has to have a contract written on or before April 30, 2010 and close on the home on or before June 30, 2010. People look at the calendar as next Monday is already March. If you want to buy a home in Katy or the surrounding areas you need to take action right now. Get off the couch and stop watching the Olympics and start looking for a home. Your first action should be to find a competent Realtor.

As a side note it takes at least 30 days to close on a home these days...Like I said TIME is running out very quickly...

If you already bought a home and do not know if you qualify or how to get your free money read my blog Titled "Sound Tax Advice". The bottom line is hire a CPA who has a tax practice which consist mainly of preparing  individual  tax returns. Don't ask your Realtor as he or she probably has no clue what to do. I am not soliciting for tax work. I only do tax work for family, friends and clients who have closed a real estate deal using me as their Realtor...

If you are currently looking for a home and already have a Realtor ask your self the question "Is this person a competent Realtor who knows the market I you looking in and can they help me with earning my free money from the US Treasury? The answer here is most likely a big NO... Interview me and then fire that other Realtor. It is not anyones fault that you picked your current Realtor because he or she is a friend of your third cousin and you feel sorry for him or her. This is real life and not a dress rehearsal. I recently had someone ask me after I had done a lot of primarly work if I could still help him even though  his wife picked a Realtor that is a friend of one her relatives  and this Realtor in the words of the potential client that he is "An Idoit". The person went to tell me You Prudential Guys are the BEST and you are so competent that I really need your help on the side. The answer was no I can not help you until you fire the other Realtor.

If you need a Realtor and want to cash in on your free money call me or E-mail me first and then arrange to interview me. I am very confident that if you interview me you will select me to be your Realtor and to represent you. I will find you an excellent home at a good price and guide you through the process of getting your money from the US Treasury.

NEED TO RENEW OR OBTAIN NEW DRIVERS LICENSE IN KATY - BETTER READ THIS !

Unfortuantely the DPS drivers license office in Katy was closed on January 29, 2010. The city of Katy for some reason declined to renew their lease. The office was located at 6202 George Bush Drive and it has been mentioned in the past that the drivers license office was in need of significantly larger space to operate efficiently. The DPS is currently searching for new space in the Katy area. Officials stated that they needed a 3,500-4,000 sq. ft facility with ample available parking and which also contains an area where testing can be conducted. Officials say  that they have no idea how long it will take for them to find a replacement facility in the Katy area. That is bad news for Katy and surrounding area residents.

Any records on pending licenses and other applications have been moved to the DPS office located at 12220 S. Gessner in Houston. Individuals with anything that was pending with the Katy office now have to go to the South Gessner location. Katy residents needing to renew their license now can also go to two other locations being 4545 Dacoma St in Houston and 1601 Yownhurst Dr. in Rosenberg. I personally would recommend trying the Rosenberg location.

I personally have been to the old Katy office a couple times in the past and I was aways happy with the service and speed the workers at this office provided their customers. I have lived in the Houston area now for a long time and outside of the Katy office the other Driver License offices I have gone to where in plain english absolutely terrible. My own license has to be renewed in two year so I hope the DPS can find a new facility in Katy before my license needs to be renewed and I hope the same work force returns to Katy.

KATY - NEED SOMETHING TO DO THIS WEEKEND?

The attractions include: Vacation, leisure and outdoor show; Cooking with Clive Berkman; Green energy products; A Go Texan pavilion; Home decorations; Kitchens, baths & related; Outdoor living ideas , pools, spa's etc.; Home Remodelers and many New Home Builders will be present; numerous workshops and exhibits where you can learn from the pro's.

There will be alot to see and learn at this show. So if you are bored this weekend without NFL football and ML baseball and only the NBA All Star Game to watch plus all those college hoops games consider going to this event. If you like homes like I do I think you will have a good time!!!

KATY ISD REZONING OF HIGH SCHOOLS - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I have copied from the Katy ISD web site a list of questions and answers the District has provived regarding the recently announced rezoning of several neighborhoods into different Katy High Schools. I wrote a blog on February 9, 2010 that covers this issue and lists the neighborhoods that are affected. Katy ISD wants the information passed through the community.

 1. Why was Katy HS not considered as part of the attendance boundary modification plan? With the goal of minimizing multiple campus moves for students, recognizing that two new future high schools are projected in the southwest sector of the school district, modifications to the current Katy High School attendance zone is not under consideration at this time. In addition, a future projected major reconstruction project at Katy High School and associated phasing will result in a strain on existing capacity capability.

 2. What is the current enrollment and capacity at all Katy ISD High Schools? Click here for current enrollment projections and capacity numbers.

3. Will transportation be provided for grandfathered students? For the grandfathered students, transportation will be provided to all current high school students through the 2012-13 school year, after which time these students will have graduated. Any future younger sibling who attends the “original” high school with the older sibling will have transportation provided only through the 2012-13 school year, after which time transportation will cease.

4. How does Taylor High School compare academically to the other schools in this recommendation? Taylor High School is a quality high performing school which is recognized across the state for sustained excellence. For example, recent achievements include 10 National Merit Scholar Semi Finalists, Recognized by NCEA Just for the Kids Higher Performing Schools list, and qualifying for the state Academic Decathlon Competition this spring. All Katy ISD High Schools offer the same graduation plans as defined by the state of Texas. Course offerings and elective offerings are very similar. Each campus offers many Advanced Placement and Dual Credit courses. State assessment tests demonstrate similar achievement levels. Of particular interest is that Taylor High School is currently rated as “Recognized” by TEA, missing “Exemplary” status by only 1% in one subject area tested. Click here to view related state achievement data. In addition, each campus has strong Fine Arts, UIL, academic and co-curricular programs often advancing to the state level of competition. The same is true in athletic competitions as each school has competed in one or more sports on the state level.

5. Will the district consider district-wide attendance boundary modifications? Not at this time. Due to ongoing projected enrollment growth, residential development (single and multi-family) and requisite new school facility construction projected over the next several years, district-wide attendance boundary modification review will not occur until residential build-out is reached within the District. Specific attendance boundary modifications will occur with both the construction of each new school facility, as well as in targeted situations to optimize enrollment capacity and balance enrollment between schools.

6. Why did Katy ISD select this public engagement process? The current process for establishing attendance boundaries was approved by the Board of Trustees in November 2008, to help remove the divisiveness that had occurred previously by using rezoning committees made up of advocates within impacted LUZs alone. Additionally, the public engagement portion of the process was selected because it allows all residents from anywhere in the district to participate within a structure that provides the district with productive and meaningful feedback. Input is open to all residents either by direct participation in a workshop or by submission of online questionnaires and surveys. The open mike-open forum format was modified to allow community members to dialogue with other members of the community and bring forth shared feedback as well as allowing individuals to provide input directly to the Administration.

7. What happens if the proposed facility referendum (bond) in November 2010 doesn’t pass? Existing campuses would have to absorb the additional students. Without a facility referendum there would be no funds available for the purchase of temporary classrooms to increase a campus’ capacity for students. It is projected that over the next several years, approximately 2,000 students per year will be added to the District. Classroom space must be found for these students. Existing support spaces (i.e. restrooms, cafeterias, etc.) may not be adequate to accommodate the increased enrollment.

8. Were all high schools considered in the attendance boundary modification to address the overcrowding at SLHS? Yes, all campuses were considered in this recommendation. However, high enrollment projections at SLHS were better addressed by moving students from CRHS to THS and SLHS to CRHS. This provided the most stability of any option and in addition improved feeder patterns. Although moving students to any other campus from SLHS might give relief, it would require areas to move several times with the opening of multiple new high school campuses projected over the next ten years resulting in an increased level of instability. Administration and community view stability as a desirable outcome.

9. Will my child be able to participate in UIL activities? Yes. Current 9-12 student-athlete’s UIL varsity eligibility is not affected because they are not changing schools. The sibling rule will allow student-athletes to go to the campus that the older sibling is attending with a Katy ISD intra-district transfer. You will not have to file a UIL residency waiver for varsity athletic eligibility. However, once you go to the campus that the older sibling is attending, you cannot transfer out without losing varsity athletic eligibility. Attendance boundary modification does not affect any sub-varsity athletic eligibility. If you have any other questions regarding UIL varsity athletic eligibility as it pertains to attendance boundary modification, please call the Katy ISD Department of Athletics at 281-396-7780, or you can contact any of the High School Campus Athletic Coordinators.

10. How will the course selection process work for students affected by the proposed ABM changes? Students will participate in the course selection process as planned at their current junior high school. Course selection information will be forwarded to the students' assigned high school later this spring. Since ninth grade course offerings are more standardized than upper class selections, moving from one high school to another as a freshman is relatively straight forward from a course selection standpoint. 11. Will current 8th grade students have equal opportunity to try out for Fine Arts, athletics, and other co-curricular programs? Yes. The proposed timeline for ABM approval provides ample time for students wishing to participate in these programs to be identified. The directors and coaches will ensure that students affected by the proposed ABM be provided equal opportunity to try out for the desired program.

The District ask us to periodically check back to see if they have provided more information regarding this topic.

KATY ISD IS REZONING HIGH SCHOOLS - PARENTS PLEASE READ

The Katy Independent School District will vote on a measure to rezone several local area neighborhoods from one high school area to another and the vote is expected on February 22, 2010. The bottom line is that Seven Lakes High School is predicted to have too many students and James Taylor is expected to not have enough. This was explained to a very small group of parents at a workshop held on Febraury 4, 2010. Elementary schools should have no effect as these schools are local to the various neighborhoods. Junior High Schools, however, will have to be affected as a Junior High School in KISD typically feeds one specific Katy High School and some neighborhoods will be changing which High School students will be attending.

People attending the workshop complained bitterly that there was a lack of information spread through the community. I hunt for local Katy  news to write about and I just learned of this late last week and wanted to get more data before I wrote a blog and made people upset. Marcy Canady, assistant superintendent for school and community engagement stated that a response to everyone's voiced concerns would be posted on the dostricts web site as soon as possible.

Per the current recommendation all current students would be grandfathered to stay where they are through graduation. If this actually happens that is good news for the children and parents. Katy District enrollment is expected to exceed 60,000 students!!!

Here are the changes by what is termed "land use zones" with the corresponding neighborhhood's shown:

Moving from Cinco Ranch to Taylor are:

Luz 66 - Highland Trails, Kelliwood Enclave, Kelliwood Gardens, Kelliwood Lakes, Kelliwood Place, Kelliwood Trails, Lake Forest and Lakes of Buckingham.

Luz 71A - Alexan Downs Apart, Kelliwood Pointe, Kelliwood Terrace, Willow Park Greens

Luz 71B - Meadow Ridge

Luz 71C - Park Hollow, Park View

Moving from Seven Lakes to Cinco Ranch are:

Luz 76 C - Bayou Crossing

Luz 77A - Fairways at Kelliwood, Greens at Willowfork,, Kelliwood Greens

Luz 77B - Arbor at Willlow Fork

Luz 79B - Canterbury Village, Meadow Glen, Residences at Cinco Ranch,South Park,Summer Point

Luz 79 C - Canyon Gate

luz 79 D - Estates at Willowfork Greens, Kelliwood Greens, Kelliwood Park

Luz 79 F - Saddlebrook Crossing

Luz 79G - Park Trace

If any of you out there think politics will not be part of the final vote/decision you are probably INCORRECT!!!! Don't hold your breath regarding passing of the Grandfathering in of existing students proposal.

If you want to see in person one of the main reasons the rezoning is becoming necessary just drive out Fry Road to Spring Green and take a right and go past the model home park on the left for Cinco Ranch and you find new homes being built at a rapid rate in all directions and all of those homes are zoned for Seven Lakes... GOOD LUCK if this affects you and your student(s)...

UIL REALIGNMENT OF HOUSTON AREA SCHOOLS - IMPACT KISD

The Unversity Interscholastic League (UIL) announced on Monday February 1, 2010 its biennial reclassification for school years 2010-2011 and 2011-2012. The UIL controls all sports and academic activity between schools throughout the entire state of Texas. The classifications of 5A, 4A and 3A are supposed to be based on size of the student population and that entails large schools will play or compete against other similar sized schools. The previous reclassification was done in 2008. Seven area schools were dropped from 5A (largest ) to 4A and those were Northbrook, Spring Woods, Stratford, Baytown Lee, Galveston Ball, Humble and New Caney. Only one school Westbury moved from 4A to 5A.

All the KISD schools (Seven Lakes, Cinco Ranch, Mayde Creek, Taylor, Katy and Morton Ranch) will shift  from 17 5A to 19 5A and will be joined by Memorial and Strake Jesuit. All of these changes will be effective with the 2010 varsity football schedule.

My step son who is sophomore at Seven Lakes asked me why did they move Strake Jesuit to play/compete against all of the Katy area schools as Strake Jesuit is close to downtown Houston and nowhere near Katy.(?) This is a really good question... Anyone out there that has a reasonable answer please step forward and enlighten us. My best guess is that someone on the UIL realignment committe has a son who attends Strake and plays football. The Katy area football program has a really high profile each year mainly due to the year to year excellence of the Katy Tigers. By playing against the Katy Tigers , Cinco Ranch and the other Katy teams plus now Memorial, the Strake program will get more attention. Strake as far as I know always has an excellent team in every sport where they compete. I don't believe they needed to be moved into the Katy ISD District to get noticed but that is what I think might have happened. It will be interesting to see on both Strake and Memorial will do while playing in the revised 19 5A District the next two years...

NEWSWEEK MAGAZINE RATINGS FOR KATY ISD HIGH SCHOOLS

We have had several inquiries for individuals looking to reloacte to this area regarding the schools and school district. We believe that the Katy ISD is one of the best in the area and one of the best in the whole state of Texas. Newsweek magazine produces a list of the top 1,600 High Schools in the entire United States which is the top 6% in the country. Newsweek of course have their own criteria as to how they evaluate each school and assign a rating. The purpose of my blog today is to report the results from their ratings for year 2009 as it applies to High Schools in the Katy area and not look at their methodology.

Katy ISD had 4 schools in the Newsweek 2009 list. The Schools making the Newsweek top ratings are as follows:

1) Seven Lakes # 413 - Please note this was the first year Seven Lakes could be rated as it was too new for a rating in the past

2) Cinco Ranch # 468 - Also note Cinco Ranch was ranked the 6 th best High School in the whole Houston Area by Children at Risk a non-profit group.

3) James E Taylor # 1,116 - Taylor has been a highly rated school for many years.

4) Katy # 1,532 - The original High School has an excellent academic program and not just a High School football machine.

While ratings by different groups are not fool proof and there are good schools that probably never get rated the Newsweek ratings go along way to show that the Katy Schools are excellent schools.

I plan to write a separate blog on each of the above Katy High Schools during 2010.

KATY SEVEN LAKES BOYS BASKETBALL PLAYS HOME GAME 1/8/10

The Katy Seven Lakes High school boys basketball team plays Conroe at Seven Lakes at 7:00 PM on Friday January 8, 2010. The Spartans are 13-5 this season so far and have an excellent overall team balance. Right now the Spartans are probably the favorite to win the 17-5A district . The leading scorer is Jake Denver who is averging approx. 16 points per game but there 4 other players who are all averging approx. 13 points per game and these guys are Ryan Syverson, Princeton Onwas, Cameron Patton and Trey Pinkey.

I wrote a blog about this team a few weeks ago when they HELD Yates to 88 points in a losing effort. Yates this season is 14-0 and beat Lee 170 - 35 this week. The total points scored by Yates set a Texas Boys Basketball High School record for the most points ever scored in one game. Yates continues to be one of the highest ranked teams in the entire US. ( Max Preps Excellent 25 ranks Yates number 2 in the US)

The Spartan's play on Monday January 11at 7:00 PM Channelview and open their district play at Katy Mayde Creek on on Friday January 15 at 7:00 PM.

We have attended seevral Seven Lakes Boys Basketball games the last few years and these games are a lot of fun and really good and cheap entertainment. If you love basketball and I do think about taking the whole family to a Spartans game.
