We all know that well-written articles with the right mix of keywords will get ranked high on Google. If your SEO isn't quite right, you may rank a bit below someone elses article and miss out on being #1 on page 1. What we may all be missing is that the new Google "+1" feature on each SERP could give you a boost above and beyond any SEO you do. This extra boost in your ranking could vault you above the folks who either just do basic blogging or pay for their ranking. Google prefers articles that are well written and well regarded. It's the "well regarded" that the +1 feature addresses. The more +1 ratings you have, the more highly regarded Google sees your articles and sites.
You want to get a +1 on your:
- Blog articles - all of them but especially the best ones
- Any site that has your profile including Activerain
- Your Google Place and Google Profile
- Any article or profile tied to the best keywords
Anyone can boost your rating and the more people you have giving you a +1 the better. You could ask your clients (depending on the relationship), friends, colleagues, and fellow bloggers. A new group started by Tammy Emineth called "Google +1 Recommendations" is designed to help show the benefits of +1 but also allow you to network with other bloggers who can give your articles the boost they need. Since the group is new, I'm writing this article to give my opinion on how best to solicit +1 recommendations. Here's how I recommend to getting a lot of +1 ratings on each of these categories:
- Go to Google.com and type in the search term where your article, site or profile resides
- Click to the page it's on in the SERP (don't click the actual link)
- Highlight the URL and post it to a message or article asking for people to click +1
- NEW STEP: Tell people in our message to click the link and find your article (see below)
- Repeat for all the articles you want people to help give you a bump
- As a courtesy to our fellow bloggers, don't post more than 5 links at a time. Other people need help too.
NOTE: Anyone who wants to help with a +1 must have a Google Profile.
