Fort Bend County Texas offers Backyard Basics Programs

Fort Bend County Texas is offers local citizens many different types programs for its populace all during the year. This summer Fort Bend County has a new initiative to promote a healthy living style by providing its residents with information about the benefits of homegrown and homemade foods. This series of lectures is called “Backyard Basics” . This series will give folks the opportunity to become do-it-yourself when it comes gardening, dehydration, selecting meats at the store and other topics.

The series holds its classes on Saturdays with the doors opening at 8:30 AM and the class starting at at 9 AM and lasts until around 11 AM. All of these programs are being held at the Bud O’Shields Community Center. The center’s address is 1330 Band Road Rosenberg Texas. The registration fee for a single class is $15 and $25 for couples. If one person signs up for all the classes the fee is $75 and if it involves a couple the fee is $125. Children under 10 years old accompanied by an adult are free.

Unfortunately, I missed the start of this program as I just became aware of the programs existence. The first class was held on Saturday August 10 and it covered Vegetable Gardening. On Saturday August 17 the topic was Composting. Those are both excellent topics. This coming Saturday August 24 the discussion will be Water Conservation. These days we all need to learn about water conservation. Most of Katy is now under voluntary water restrictions due to the lack of meaningful rainfall. Food Dehydration and Freezing will be covered on Saturday September 7 as no class will be held over the Labor Day weekend. Growing Backyard Fruit will be covered on September 14 and the program finale is September 21 where Selecting Meat/Beef and Grilling will be the featured discussion item.

Plans are already in the works for another set of these programs to be held during the  summer of 2014. Hopefully I will remember and alert everyone in advance of the first program.
