Catching Falling Stars in Katy Texas and Beyond

Perseid Meteor Showers have been seen for over 2,000 years. The latest three day appearance in the Northern Hemisphere will be August 10 thru August 13, 2011 so check your local area information so you and your family can enjoy the show. At peek activity points as many as 60 meteors per hour can be seen like Falling Stars in the sky. Visibility will be hampered by the full moon on August 13, 2011.

The Perseid meteor shower is named after the constellation Perseus that is located close to the same point in the night sky as where the meteor shower will appear. The main source of the meteor shower is debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle. Every year the earth passes through this debris cloud left by the comet. The earth’s atmosphere is being bombarded by what everyone in history has called “Falling Stars”. The meteors are no larger in most cases than a grain of sand.

The best place to observe this meteor shower is somewhere very dark with no light pollution. In Katy, Texas there are several areas where one can go to observe these meteors but all are out in the country away from city lights of any kind. Find a country road and drive until you can‘t see any type of lights.

Check out the meteor shower this coming weekend as it will certainly be a cheap source of family entertainment. The Brazos Bend State park is located near Needville, Texas which is in the far southeast border of Fort Bend County has an observation hill and George Observatory. Brazos Bend should be an excellent location to watch the meteor shower and you can bring your own telescope. Try their web site for more information.
